Man refuses to show boarding pass, assaults TSA officers

Salem's Anthony Wayne Tavoloni was arrested on Aug. 20, 2017

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A Salem man was sentenced Wednesday to three-years of probation and three-months of home detention for attacking and wrestling one TSA officer and punching another officer over a year ago at Portland International Airport.

Anthony Wayne Tavoloni, 45, was arrested at PDX's TSA checkpoint on Aug. 20, 2017. He plead guilty on May 21 to two counts of assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers or employees.

The incident, according to court documents reported, began when a TSA officer asked Tavoloni to present identification and his boarding pass at the checkpoint. Tavoloni said no. The officer then repeated her request, to which Tavoloni responded, "You really want to do this?" as he stepped toward the officer's checkpoint stand.

Tavoloni then proceeded to go behind the stand as the officer backed away, saying "stop, stop, stop," court documents said. Tavoloni then grabbed her arm and tried wrestling her to the ground as multiple nearby passengers responded and restrained Tavoloni as he clung onto the TSA officer's forearm.

Once separated, multiple TSA officer stood between Tavoloni and the attacked officer, but according to court documents that didn't deter Tavoloni.

"We're about to have bad day," he reportedly exclaimed. "Do you really want to do this?"

A different TSA officer reportedly answered, "No one needs to have a bad day."

Tavoloni then hit that TSA officer in the face before he was wrestled down and restrained until Port of Portland police were on scene.

It's not known why Tavoloni decided not to provide his ID and boarding pass.
