Mom spots burglar at SE Portland food cart

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Moms have good eyes.

The mother of the owner of a Southeast Portland food cart was watching their surveillance camera at home and spotted a burglar breaking the lock, stealing keys and a computer pad.

But one man was found shortly after and taken into custody.

Tammy Hart, who owns the Road Runner BBQ at SE Foster and 52nd, said her mom watched it all unfold.

“He took the key out of top of the cash register and tried to open it. He couldn’t get that done,” she said “He was getting frustrated pacing back and forth in there so finally he took the cash register, yanked it, and threw it on the ground. And when he did that it pulled the electrical cord out of the register and it blew a circuit and all the lights went out.”

He took a little money but didn’t take any food, she said.

“My mom was watching this live at home so she grabbed a neighbor and they started heading down here and they first came to the truck,” Hart told KOIN 6 News. “Then they saw him at Plaid Pantry and that’s where they arrested him.”

Jason Lagers was arrested for the December 28, 2018 incident and has since been released from jail. Hart said this is the 5th time someone has broken into their truck.

She said she never thinks about changing locations.

“Nope, not gonna let them run me out of here. This is where my dad has always been and we got good customers and, you know, I don’t want to go anywhere. I like it here.”
