Man arrested after hours-long standoff in SE Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One man was taken into custody after special units from the Portland Police Bureau spent hours in a standoff.

Authorities say the SERT and Crisis Negotiation Teams were serving a warrant at a residence in the 7200 block of Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard, beginning around 3 p.m. Inside the home was one resident — a man who was the subject of a criminal investigation.

The warrant was for crimes including menacing with a firearm and assault.

Four homes in the area were evacuated prior to police contacting the man. The CNT then spoke to the suspect for several hours in an attempt to get him outside, speaking on the phone or making public address announcements.

At one point, SERT pumped CS gas into the home.

Ultimately, SERT entered the home with a K-9 and took the man into custody. He was then sent to the hospital for evaluation.

Police say the criminal investigation is ongoing and criminal charges are pending.
