PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Salem woman died and a man was wounded after shots were fired in the parking lot of a bar in the early hours of Sunday, police said.
Officers rushed to the Pine Street Pub, 460 Pine Street NE, around 1:30 a.m. and found both people in the parking lot. Both were rushed to the hospital, but the woman, Jennifer Black, died from her injuries. The Salem resident was 40.
Rich Windfield was outside the bar smoking and talking with friends when the shots rang out.
“People on the inside were laughing and carrying on and all of a sudden somebody opened fire and someone shot off 5 or 6 rounds in rapid succession and once they were done we went in the bar and they closed us up,” witness Rich Windfield said.
The man, whose name has not been released, remains hospitalized and officials provided no update on his condition. Witnesses told KOIN 6 News the man was shot in the back.
“I saw them when they were being worked on yeah, so it’s really sad about the girl, but he’s a trooper, he’s going to hang in there I think,” Windfield said.
Despite a search that included K-9s, no suspect has been found. Detectives remain at the scene at this time.
“We initiated a K9 track, unfortunately, we weren’t able to find a suspect,” Lt. Treven Upkes said.
Upkes said officers will be working to determine whether the incident is related toa series of other shootings that have happened in Salem in recent weeks.
“We are looking at adding some directed patrols and changing some staffing around to get some people around to some hot spots that have been happening with these recent shootings and really put a stop to this,” Upkes said.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Salem Police Hotline at 503.588.8477.
