Suspect dead after gun battle, car fire in Roseburg

Roseburg Police Department said suspect was driving stolen car

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A suspect involved in a gun battle with authorities in Roseburg after allegedly stealing a car and then leading police on a pursuit was found dead inside the car after it caught on fire.

The Roseburg Police Department said on Saturday authorities received a report that a stolen car was possibly seen at Love's Travel Shop, located at 280 Grant Smith Road.

The car was initially reported stolen out of Eugene on Thursday and supposedly contained multiple weapons and ammunition, including a semi-automatic rifle.

Officials responded to the area and tried to stop the car as it was leaving the shop, however, it fled the area. Officers pursued the car to a nearby ranch where it became stuck in a field.

According to police, the driver started to shoot at authorities -- prompting multiple officers to return fire. As the shootout continued, the stolen car began to smoke and soon caught on fire.

The remains of the driver -- who has not been identified -- were later found in the car.

No authorities were injured during Saturday's incident, but the involved officers were placed on leave.
