PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man jumped into the Columbia River in St. Helens on Tuesday afternoon to avoid being caught by the police.

Police tried to take the suspect, Brain Martin, into custody near downtown St. Helens on a parole and probation detainer. When they attempted to arrest him, Martin fled the scene in a car.

A little while later, officers saw Martin running down the St. Helens Docks. He dove in and began swimming toward Sand Island Marine Park.

Police sent out two ships to reach Martin and gave him a floatation device once he refused to board. After about an hour and a half in the water, Martin surrendered and boarded the ship.

Once he was taken to shore, Martin again tried to flee the scene. He was unsuccessful in his second attempt and was taken into custody before being sent to a Portland hospital for evaluation.
