PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A transgender woman was taken to OHSU after she was attacked at Agate Beach State Park in Newport.

The victim was using the women’s bathroom at the park on Saturday when a man attacked her, according to court documents.

Witnesses told police they saw the suspect — identified as 37-year-old Fred Joseph Costanza — hit the victim more than 10 times.

The victim suffered multiple breaks in her jaw and a skull fracture.

Costanza was taken into custody and faces several charges, including 2nd-degree assault, menacing and harassment.

The case is being investigated as a bias crime.
