Stolen French bulldog returned to Portland yard

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A thief was caught on camera stealing a puppy from a Southeast Portland yard — but that puppy was returned to the homeowners early Friday.

A Portland police officer spotted the car used in the theft parked at a bar on SE 82nd Avenue, authorities said. When police found the suspect, Anthony Olson, he led officers to where he left the dog with some food.

Olson was arrested and faces 2 charges of theft. The dog was returned to the family.

Earlier information

The puppy — a French bulldog — was taken from a yard in the 12300 block of Southeast Steele Street at about 9 p.m. Wednesday night, Portland Police said.

A Ring home security camera recorded a man wearing a bright yellow shirt walk up to the fence surrounding the yard. He opens the gate, lets the puppy out, scoops it into his arms and walks to a car waiting on the other side of the street.

Josie Aguiniga told KOIN 6 News she was shocked that someone would steal her 10-month-old puppy named Grisly from her front yard.

“It was surprising because somebody just opened my gate and took her,” Aguiniga said.

The thief took more than Aguiniga’s dog — he also took her sense of security.

“What if they took my daughter just like that?” she wondered. “Because you think you’re safe here because you have the fence and everything, you think that you are safe but now that made me feel like I’m not.”

Aguiniga said her 7-year-old daughter had only just come back inside the house moments before the puppy was stolen. The daughter noticed the dog — who she regards as “another little sister” — was missing 10 minutes later.

Aguiniga thinks the thief had been watching her family and took advantage of Grisly’s friendly puppy demeanor. She said that due to the puppy’s rare dark gray coloring, it’s worth about $7,000. Unfortunately, Grisly is not microchipped.

“She can go with everybody and look like she knows them but no. She is so friendly, she likes to jump and she is so excited when she sees people.”
