BORING, Ore. (KOIN) — The man shot in the chest outside a Boring bar was nearly run over by a van driven by a man who now stands accused of trying to kill him, his family said.

Dustin Schaffer was at the Not So Boring Bar, 28014 Southeast Wally Road, with his wife Tina around 11 p.m. Friday when he was wounded. Tina told KOIN 6 News Schaffer was in the parking lot when a man later identified as Gerald Bruce Newman nearly ran over a friend’s motorcycle in a white van.

Schaffer took a picture of it as an argument ensued, she said. Deputies said they were initially called to the bar because of a fight. Newman backed up the van, then hit the gas, sped toward Schaffer and nearly ran him over.

Then, she said, Newman threw the van in “park,” jumped out and shot Schaffer in the chest.

“Who’s next?” Newman allegedly yelled as Tina watched.

Deputies were there so quickly, she said, Newman had little time to react. The 59-year-old was arrested without incident and authorities said they seized a pistol.

Newman was booked into Clackamas County Jail on charges of 1st-degree assault, attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon. His bail was set at $260,000.

Tina told KOIN 6 News she and Schaffer had never seen Newman before and they didn’t see him in the bar before the shooting.

“I think Dustin was trying to be a hero and break up a fight and he ended up getting shot,” said his friend, Everett Nealey. “That’s Dustin. He’s a good guy.”

Nealey said the shooting is a shock to everyone in town.

“In Boring we don’t have any violence and stuff like that. Dustin’s a really good guy. We all know him. This is a small town. Everybody knows everybody.”

Schaffer’s aunt told KOIN 6 News he’s in good spirits at Legacy Emanuel but has a long road of recovery ahead.

There is a GoFundMe for his recovery.
