Woman escapes attacker in Salem's Minto Brown Park

The man allegedly tried to drag her into the brush

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A woman escaped an attacker in Salem's Minto Brown Park Thursday evening, Salem police said.

Police said the 29-year-old woman was walking near the pedestrian bridge around 5 p.m. when she was knocked down and a man with a knife dragged her into the brush. She fought off her attacker and ran away.

Within minutes, officers found a person matching the attacker's description. David Belluno, 23, was arrested on charges of kidnapping I, attempted rape I, menacing, assault IV and unlawful use of a weapon.

In court Friday, the prosecutor asked the judge to hold Belluno on at least $500,000 bail because he didn't know the victim and therefore all women could be at risk if he were released. The judge took it one step further, denying bail.

Regulars at Minto Brown Park said it would be easy to surprise someone due to the size of the park and the terrain.

"It has these asphalt trails running all through it and this area back over in here is all wooded, so yeah, it could have been very easy," Edward Dietrich said. "She could have been back in there somewhere and it wouldn't have been difficult."

Bevery Smith, who frequently walks at the park, said several people called her out of concern after hearing about the attack.

"It has bothered me and I keep thinking you know, should I keep doing this? So today after three phone calls and I then I know come here most often, I'm going to be smarter," Smith said. "I'm going to walk this non-beautiful scenery path because now I have to be more, you know, scared."
