Daycare owner charged in infant’s death

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Eugene daycare owner faces charges after a 9-month-old boy who was in her care died.

William Cannon stopped breathing at Little Big Blessings in Eugene on August 22, 2018. Eugene police said he was rushed to a local hospital and then flown to a Portland hospital, where he died two days later.

Nearly a year later on July 22, 2019, Nicole Leigh Sumpter was charged in connection to his death. The 27-year-old faces charges of 2nd-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, 1st-degree criminal mistreatment and tampering with evidence.

Little Big Blessings closed on August 23, 2018, and has not reopened.
