PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Lane County Deputy saved a woman whose inner tube overturned in the Willamette River on Saturday.

Deputy Codey Crawford was the first to arrive on the scene after he received the call. Marine Patrol and local fire departments were on their way with boats, but Deputy Crawford believed something needed to done immediately.

After seeing that the woman was clinging onto a downed tree and could barely keep her head above water, Deputy Crawford began swimming out to her equipped with a life jacket and a bag of safety rope.

However, the woman lost hold of the log before he was able to reach her. She was swept underwater but was able to make her way to the far side of the river.

Deputy Crawford was able to swim over and stayed with her until a rescue boat arrived and carried them to the other side of the river.
