PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Dozens of cyclists took to the streets for a Ride of Silence honoring Lance Hart, who was killed by a suspected drunk driver in June.

Hart was riding his bike near Southeast Flavel and 78th when he was hit on Sunday, June 23.

Those at the Ride of Silence said the event not only pays tribute to Hard but highlights the need for drivers to be more aware of cyclists.

“Shows the loss of a life,” Bike Loud volunteer Mat Chuwilliams said. “The absence of that voice in the community. We’re hoping we can amplify what that loss looks like and have a little more awareness on the roads.”

Nicholas Martinez, 21, was charged with 2nd-degree manslaughter, reckless driving and DUII after the crash. Police said he told the officer he had been drinking Sprite and tequila all day. He said he looked down to take a bite of his taquito and when he looked up, the bicyclist was in front of his car.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help Hart’s family.
