PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Students in the Portland area are heading back to school next week and that means reeling into summer bedtimes, getting back to an alarm clock and packing lunches.
“Kids thrive on being informed so they do not like surprises,” child safety expert Amy Kroeker said. “Making sure to tell kids, have a school calendar countdown where they’re gonna start, you can start shopping for healthy snacks and things like that that they would want to have around school.”
Experts suggest dialing back bedtime 15 minutes a night until you get back to your normal school routine.
The National Sleep Foundation recommends between 9 and 11 hours for elementary school-aged children and between 8 and 10 for teenagers.
