Fire destroys 3 semi-trucks in SE Portland

News

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Danill Shapovalov drove into work early on Thursday morning — only to be met with flames.

Several semi-trucks in the lot at VH Truck Service Repair Shop in Southeast Portland were on fire, prompting neighboring business employees to rush toward Shapovalov.

“They ran toward me yelling ‘Dial 911, dial 911!'” Shapovalov told KOIN 6 News.

Surveillance footage shows that the fire strangely started on its own near the windshield on the driver’s side of a semi-truck. Flames quickly spread — destroying three semis and two nearby trucks.

Firefighters worked quickly to put out the blaze, but fighting flames fueled by diesel isn’t easy. It’s also an environmental hazard.

“It’s a difficult one because there’s different compartments the fire stays in,” Portland Fire Battalion Chief James Ziegler said. “We’ve also noticed BES because they do have a drain system that collects all the diesel run off.”

Officials are working to figure out what caused the fire.
