BEAVERTON, Ore. (KOIN) — A seafood sale in Beaverton this weekend did more than solve dinner plans.
Fresh herring, rockfish and wild shrimp were donated by commercial fishermen and Pacific Seafoods in Clackamas for the 1st Annual Seafood Sale supporting childhood cancer research and awareness.
Doctors and families held the sale Saturday at a cancer research lab in Beaverton.
Ten-pound bags of fresh herring were sold for $10, while rockfish and shrimp were $5 per pound.
One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to research funding.
“If you buy a bag of fresh herring for $10, exactly $10 goes to research into kid’s caners, not one penny less,” said Molly Lindquist of the Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute.
Charles Keller is part of a team at the Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute that’s working on creating new and improved medications for kids battling cancer across the country. He said he hoped the sale would raise $5,000 and “a whole lot of awareness.”
“Once this becomes a tradition, you can really make some money,” Keller said. “The group that does this in British Columbia every year — they sell 60 tons.”
