PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Mando’s food truck in Northeast Portland serves some of the best wings in the city.
The American style food has been a hit over the last year, winning Willamette Week awards and gaining social media popularity.
Co-owners George and Mando say they became friends when they were part of the underground rap scene and made their way over to the food scene together.
“There’s a lot of people in the hip-hop scene out here that used to do music, they’re now tapping in with the food, which is a beautiful thing,” George said. “You know, everybody’s finding their niche. There’s enough money out here for everybody to eat, literally.”
George and Mando continue to promote the business on Facebook and Instagram, and both say the platforms have contributed to the cart’s success.
“With the whole popularity of social media with us being rappers, we already had that fan base,” George said.
George’s wife owns Creme de la Creme Cupcakery and makes around 80 uniquely-flavored cupcakes for the cart per day. George says they always sell out.
Lines start to form at Mando’s when they open for lunch at 12 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. They close at 9 p.m.
