PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Pro-choice advocates joined Oregon lawmakers Friday in downtown Portland to speak out in favor of protecting legal abortions.
Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden attended the rally, along with Representatives Suzanne Bonamici and Kurt Schrader.
“In America, women are going to control their own healthcare and not the government,” Wyden said to cheers.
Bonamici said the recent near-bans on abortions in several southern states are clear attempts at overturning judicial precedent.
“I remember what it was like before Roe v. Wade,” Bonamici said. “I was in high school and I have to say — wealthy women might be able to find an abortion and terrified teens would result to self-help or a back alley and women died.”
The Congresswoman said she’s concerned about the well-being of women in Missouri, Alabama, Georgia and Arkansas.
“If those states force women to go forward with unwanted pregnancies, we could be sending women to their death. We must do better,” said Bonamici.
Merkley said they’re standing in solidarity against anti-choice and anti-abortion forces.
“We’re here to collectively together to send a powerful message that reproductive care is healthcare,” he said.
The lawmakers stressed that they will continue fighting for pro-choice reproductive freedoms in Oregon and beyond.
