Lost Pacific Crest Trail hiker rescued near Detroit

Robert Campbell started hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in May

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man was found a day after calling 911 while hiking along the Pacific Crest Trail near Detroit.

Search and rescue teams with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office found 50-year-old Robert Campbell at about 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

Campbell called 911 to report he’d become lost in the Willamette National Forest after blizzard-like conditions swept through the area. He was out of food and had lost some of his gear by the time rescuers found him.

Rescuers followed fresh footprints in the snow to find him, deputies said.

The man said he started hiking the PCT near the Mexico border in May.
