Homeless man beautifies strip of land he camps on

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — You don’t often hear positive comments about homeless camps that pop up around Portland, but some in Northeast Portland are singing the praises of one camper who has landscaped and beautified his spot.

Pablo Moore developed a green thumb early on after generations of his family were involved in the landscaping business.

“I do maintenance or installation of gardens you know, very similar to this, I like to work with a lot of native plants,” Moore said.

He’s been doing for-hire landscaping for about 15 years but with skyrocketing housing costs, he turned to a small trailer to keep a roof over his head.

“The market is pretty high out there actually,” he said.

He ended up at his current spot about a year ago and got to work trimming branches, hauling away bags of trash and tree litter to make way for a wildflower garden.

“A few different types of salvia in here we have poppies of course…. I’ve got a fern that I moved in down there,” he told KOIN.

A friend who works in the tree business gave Pablo some wood chips and he set about creating a path so people didn’t have to walk in the mud.

“Just trying to be thoughtful a little bit to people walking down the street,” Moore said.

He moved on to building a compost station and used a sifter to clean rocks and trash from the dirt in order to grow vegetables. He even planted soft grass where weeds once choked the block.

Moore stores his landscaping tools at a friend’s house in the neighborhood. He also cooks there.

Neighbors told KOIN  6 News he is making a positive impact.

He said it makes him feel good that he’s accepted as a member of the community, decreasing his worry that at some point he might be forced to move.

“I’ve worried about that for quite a few years now being homeless and being in a trailer and it’s just nice to be able to kind of relax now,” he said.
