Pacific Lifestyle, St. Jude partner to end childhood cancer

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- For decades, children with rare cancers in Oregon and Washington have been flying to Memphis for help.

But now, St. Jude has officially opened an office in Oregon, and because of that a local home builder added the hospital to its list of charities it helps through its Giving House Program.

Gideon Janku recently explored one of Pacific Lifestyle's model homes in Ridgefield -- which will be similar to the Giving House built nearby to benefit St. Jude patients like him.

Pacific Lifestyle got involved after their purchasing manager, Jason Bodily, asked them to.

"It didn't take much to sell," Bodily said. "I just took it to Pacific Lifestyle Homes and in literally a minute and a half, we were signed up."

Bodily is a cancer dad. His 9-year-old daughter, Macey, has fought three brain tumors.

"We found out St. Jude was researching this very rare tumor, which is great," Bodily told KOIN 6 News. "My wife called up St. Jude and literally that evening had the head of research doctors. Two weeks later, St. Jude was flying them out."

St. Jude has been helping Northwest kids for decades when they're diagnosed with rare cancers that local hospitals haven't seen before.

The research from Gideon's case is now helping other children.

DeeAnna Janku with St. Jude said, "Now there's local patients being treated for melanoma because St. Jude has sent that information back to local hospitals and now they do know what to do when they see a child like Gideon."

There are three Pacific Lifestyle Giving Houses this year -- which will benefit several charities.

St. Jude just opened an office in Oregon and they have organized a big fundraiser walk at the Oregon Zoo in September. The Giving House money will fund that walk with Pacific Lifestyle Homes as the presenting sponsor.

There will be a big kick off to sign up for the walk Saturday, June 30 in the Seven Wells neighborhood in Ridgefield. Find more details here.
