PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 10-year-old Portland girl had a pretty special day on August 6.
Wren Grabham has spinal muscular atrophy, a degenerative muscle disease. She’s been in a wheelchair since she was 3-years-old.
Make-a-Wish Oregon gifted Wren with her request — a swim spa so she could float out of her chair like a mermaid and have pool parties with her friends.
“I love to swim, I can float around all day,” Wren said. “I can sometimes stand up when I can reach the bottom. It makes it so that I can moves my legs around and stretch and stuff.”
On top of the swim spa, she also got a day named in her honor and a surprise block party. More than 150 people attended the party Saturday afternoon. An official from the mayor’s office came to proclaim that August 6 is officially “Mermaid Day” in Wren’s honor.
August is spinal muscular atrophy awareness month.
