It’s not too late to see the swifts at Chapman Elementary

The birds usually fly away by the beginning of October

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — You still have some time left to see the swifts at Chapman Elementary School before they fly away for the winter.

Between 1,000-10,000 swifts are seen each night of September. They usually leave by the beginning of October.

In 2018, by September 29, only 310 swifts were spotted.

The Portland Audubon counts the swifts most nights of the month. They say anywhere between 500-3,500 people gather to watch them each night.

It’s best to arrive one hour before sunset.
