When I saw over 300 kids file into the Newmark Theatre in Downtown Portland, I kind of expected a bit of chaos trying to get all the children to sit still and pay attention to the show. I remember being their age and when you left school for a field trip, it was a party atmosphere. But, when the lights went down and the stage lights went up, they were collectively riveted. For a solid 1 hour and five minutes, every child in the theater was hanging on every word of Ramona Quimby. More than that, for a solid 1 hour and five minutes, these kids weren’t glued to a television, smartphone or video game. The Oregon Children’s Theatre puts on about 5 shows per year and they also have many classes for kids (ages 4 to 18) who are interested in Theater Arts.
