14-year-old girl drowns in pond near Silverton

MARION COUNTY, Ore. (KOIN) -- A 14-year-old girl drowned Wednesday night in a pond at Canyonview Camp.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said they responded to the scene in the 13000 block of Finlay Road NE after camp personnel reported that a swimmer had disappeared underwater and couldn't be found.

Lifeguards and camp counselors were searching the 2-acre pond for the missing swimmer as deputies arrived.

Swimming safety tips

A short time later, the body of Naomi Rudolph of Keizer was recovered from the water. Naomi had been working at the camp as a junior camp counselor and was using her off time to swm in the pond.

From their investigation, deputies believe the teen was swimming when she began to struggle and called for help. Unfortunately, lifeguards were unable to get to her before she went under the water and later died.

According to the sheriff's office, this drowning marks the first in Marion County for the 2018 summer season.
