Fast and the Fremont: Drivers do donuts, shutdown bridge

Viewers said the stunts lasted for about 20 minutes

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- It looks like a scene straight out of Hollywood: Crowds filming and cars doing donuts on an empty bridge as rubber burns and smoke exudes.

But this caught-on-camera moment wasn't in a studio in Southern California. Instead, this happened for about 20 minutes Saturday night on the Fremont Bridge, and according to Dave Thompson with the Oregon Dept. of Transportation, this isn't anything new.

"It's happened a number of times in the past," Thompson said.

"Each time we just scratch our heads."

Kristin Britton Dills was heading home last night when she found herself stuck with a front-row seat. She opened her door -- confused -- got out and started filming. She said about 30 other people did, as well, coming dangerously close to the spinning cars.

"It felt dangerous in the beginning, but it felt really dangerous," she said. "Then I was concerned that someone was going to get hit."

Portland police said they tracked down some of the drivers and issued them citations.

Thompson said these type of stunts can be dangerous for citizens, like Britton Dills, trying to drive normal commutes.

"In the back of that long line of cars that they've stopped, somebody could be running into the back of those cars not realizing that everyone is stopped in front of them," he said.

"You're putting their lives at risk for your fun."
