Fireworks go off at St. Johns restaurants

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- One minute customers were enjoying a nice evening on the patio at the Garrison Tap Room Monday night, and the next they were dodging fireworks blasting around them.

"The entire patio just kinds lit up in sparks," manager Michael Norwood said.

There were 25-30 people, including families with kids and dogs, who all had to dive for cover when a barrage of fireworks came in their direction. A woman at a nearby bus stop was nearly hit.

"There was a black sedan driving this direction here, and shot directly past her, flew right around our fire pit area and caught a couple people," Norwood said.

The mortar fireworks witnesses say were shot from inside that car landed next door at 87th and Meatballs.

Manager Quintin Scalfaro said the store had just closed its doors but there were still a few people inside when the sparks started flying.

"The first loud bang we thought it was potentially something worse than fireworks, but once we saw the sparks we realized it was fireworks," Scalfaro said.

Witnesses said one man's shirt caught fire and Scalfaro said a woman got a burn on her finger.

"Overall no one was injured, which is a miracle in my book because there were a lot of people outside," Scalfaro said.

87th and Meatballs doesn't believe they were specifically targeted, but Norwood said it doesn't matter if those responsible were trying to cause harm.

"I get the feeling that it was just a prank but at the same time, it is not funny," Norwood said. "People could get really get hurt. Things burn down."

One manager said he's upset that despite the fire in the Gorge the was started by fireworks, people still haven't learned their lesson about how dangerous they can be.

Portland Fire and Rescue is investigating the incident, but couldn't provide any more information.
