Protesters arrested at ICE facility as tensions boil

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Eight protesters were arrested at the ICE facility in SW Portland on Wednesday morning.

Tensions boiled over in the morning as federal officers and protesters came face-to-face.

The protesters were arrested after they tried to block a transport van from leaving the facility. Federal officers arrived and started shooting pepper spray and pepper balls, and also used tasers to try and get the protesters out of the van's way.

Federal police also said protesters were throwing objects at them.

According to protesters, they tried to block the vehicle because they believed a man, who was an undocumented immigrant, was being transported out of the holding facility.

Federal agents had previously warned protesters they would be arrested if they tried to block the driveway and entrance.

Those arrested were taken into the ICE building, but by mid-afternoon, at least one of them was released.

Southwest Bancroft Road was blocked off. It's unclear how long it will remain closed.

For weeks, the Southwest Portland facility has been a hub for protests ever since occupiers blocked and shutdown the facility in response to the immigration crisis. Federal officers, clad in riot gear, removed occupy protesters that were blocking the ICE facility for over a week on June 28. Since then, protesters have remained camped near the facility.

On Monday, three protesters were arrested and two Federal Protective Service officers were "assaulted" outside the ICE facility

The officers suffered minor injuries, according to a spokesman with the DHS.
