School bus swerves to avoid hitting cat, crashes

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) --- Two students from Rose City Park School suffered minor injuries when their bus driver swerved to avoid hitting a cat and instead crashed into a tree and parked car Friday morning.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. on NE 57th and Thompson Street, right in front of Cindy Casama-Gerber's house. The bus damaged the tree in front of her home and crunched her car like a tin can.

When she heard the crash, she ran outside and found her car on her lawn with the bus wedged into a tree. She and other neighbors sprung into action and formed a line to help pull the kids off the bus and get them to a safe spot on the sidewalk.

She told KOIN 6 News it was a blessing nobody was on the sidewalk or in the parked car when the bus slammed into them. Two other cars were damaged in the crash.

PPS spokesperson Dave Northfield said the Beverly Cleary elementary students were only about a block away from school when the crash happened.

One child was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and the other was treated at the scene.

The driver, whose name has not been released, will undergo a drug test as required by the Department of Transportation.

First Student, the private transportation company that is contracted by the school, has not returned a request for comment from KOIN 6 News.
