Three arrested during protest near OHSU buildings

Protest began around 5:45 p.m. Thursday

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Three people were arrested during a protest in the South Waterfront area near OHSU buildings Thursday night.

Portland police said protesters started marching and blocking the street near Elizabeth Caruthers Park on SW Moody Avenue around 5:45 p.m. Police told them to move onto the sidewalks.

Organizers affiliated with Occupy ICE and other groups said they were protesting "OHSU's use of prisoners who are paid only $0.05 an hour to wash their bloody sheets in unsafe conditions."

Police said they saw one marcher who they believed was the suspect in a June 3 assault and he was taken into custody. Jacob Bureros, 31, was charged with harassment.

Two other protesters were arrested after police said someone threw a water bottle, hitting an officer. Police used pepper spray and took them into custody. Sherry Motamedi, 43, and Zoe McLain, 21, were both charged with resisting arrest, interfering with a peace officer and 2nd-degree disorderly conduct.

Protest organizers claim police used force to arrest Motamedi and McLain and used pepper spray on a crowd that included disabled people and children.

Police said no injuries were reported.
