PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man was found dead on the east side of Colonel Summers Park on Tuesday morning.
Portland Police said they received a call around 7:40 a.m. about a man’s body found near SE Belmont Street and SE 20th Avenue. Sgt. Chris Burley said police believe the man was at the park for several hours before being discovered.
The man was later identified as 40-year-old Boyd Littell of Portland.
Homicide detectives, criminalists from the Forensic Evidence Division, investigators with the Traffic Division and the personnel from the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s office responded to conduct a death investigation.
Officials said Wednesday they believe Littell’s death was an accidental death, likely the result of him falling off his bicycle.
The co-owner of Belmont Collective — a marijuana shop nearby — said he saw the body around 7 a.m. when he was walking his girlfriend to her car, but assumed it was a homeless man sleeping.
“As I’m walking her to her car, the guy laying on the ground, not thinking much of it,” Isaiah Villegas said. “He had his bike right next to him. It just looked off, didn’t look right. At the same time, I was tired and didn’t think much of it.”
The park is frequented by homeless people, according to police — who have received numerous calls about the homeless in the past.
SE 20th Avenue was closed from Belmont Street to Taylor Street during the investigation, however, one lane of traffic opened around 12:30 p.m.
Anyone with information about this death is asked to call 503.823.0991.
