PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A surgical mask-wearing bank robbery suspect was captured in a taxi just blocks away from the scene of the crime.

Wes Edward Hamman was reportedly wearing a blue T-shirt, sunglasses and a surgical mask when he walked into the Key Bank near SE 41st Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard last week, court documents show.

He’s accused of giving the bank teller a note that said something close to, “Gun!! Give me all the $ Now!!,” a federal complaint states.

Police were then told to be on the lookout for a taxi in the area. They reportedly spotted one close by on SE 39th Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard.

Officers apprehended the robber, identified as Hamman, inside the cab. Police found about $21 on the floorboard and $2,189 shoved behind the front passenger seat.

As he was taken to jail, Hamman reportedly said he needed the money to fix his car.

Hamman is being held in Multnomah County Detention Center on federal charges.
