PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Bicyclists continue to find tacks in their tires as they ride over the Hawthorne Bridge, a problem that began surfacing weeks ago.
Multnomah County workers said they’re working to fix the problem by cleaning the bridge daily and using a magnet to pick up the tacks. But the problem continues to plague riders.
“(Tuesday) they found about 12 tacks, Monday they found about 20 and Friday they found in the 20 to 40 range,” said the county’s Mike Pullen.
Wednesday, 14 more tacks were found near the off-ramp.
“People are pretty upset and frustrated,” said Jonathan Maus of BikePortland.
Pullen said the county has “cameras on the bridges and so far they haven’t been able to identify anything going on.”
The Portland police said no official reports have been filed, but they are looking into the situation.
“It’s an aggressive, dangerous thing,” Pullen said.
So far, the Hawthorne Bridge is the only one where tacks have been found.
