Motorcyclist strikes, kills bear near Detroit Lake

MARION COUNTY, Ore. (KOIN) — A motorcyclist sustained multiple injuries after colliding with a black bear Sunday afternoon not far from Detroit Lake, according to authorities.

Idanha-Detroit Fire District said the collision happened on U.S. Forest Service Road 46, 18 miles from Detroit Lake.

The road is also known as Breitenbush Road.

Authorities said when they arrived, the 150-200 pound bear was deceased on the side of the road.

The motorcyclist sustained multiple injuries and a helicopter was called to assist.

Due to heavy smoke in the Detroit and Breitenbush area, the helicopter was unable to land near the scene.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Lyons and then flown to a hospital where he’s expected to survive.

The bear was taken care of by the U.S. Forest Service.
