Shots in SE Portland; ‘it’s like I’m back in Somalia’

No one has been taken into custody

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A shooting in Southeast Portland sent one person to the hospital on Thursday evening.

The shooting happened just before 5 p.m. near Southeast 92nd Avenue and Powell Boulevard.

A neighbor said she heard the gunfire and saw a white car speeding north toward Southeast Clinton Street.

“We were sitting on the porch and we heard a couple of gunshots, about 4, and we heard someone screaming,” Emily St. John told KOIN 6 News. “Then we looked out the window and the whole road was blocked off.”

A man was taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officials closed Southeast 92nd between Powell and Division.

No one has been taken into custody.

Detectives launched an investigation into the shooting. It’s the 7th in just the past week.

For Mo Adem, the chaos didn’t make a good first impression. He’s originally from East Africa and just moved to the area 2 months ago from Texas with his kids.

“It’s like I’m back home — back in Somalia,” Adem said.
