Driver arrested in crash that killed former UO athlete

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A 21-year-old was arrested by Eugene Police on Tuesday, four days after he was behind the wheel of a rollover crash that left a recent, former Oregon football player dead. 

Pedro Chavarin Jr. -- a University of Oregon student according to the school registrar -- was arrested by and charged with first-degree manslaughter after an investigation by Eugene Police's Major Collision Investigation team.

Fotu Leiato, 21, was found dead on Friday morning, four hours after Chavarin crashed and reportedly told police he had no passengers. 

Police said they responded on Friday at 2:31 a.m. to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Kinsrow Avenue for a single-vehicle crash. They found a 2014 Kia sedan off the road and in heavy bush. They also found Chavarin, who said he was alone. He was cited with DUII,

At 6:51 a.m., Eugene Police said a woman walking in the area saw a body down a gravel path. That body was later identified as Leiato. 

Leiato, a Steilacoom, Washington native, spent three seasons with the Oregon football team. He was dismissed from the team on May 24, according to Duck Territory.
