Governor Brown signs Holocaust education bill

Oregon

The bill inspired by Holocaust survivor Alter Wiener

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Governor Kate Brown signed SB 664 on Monday morning.

The bill requires school districts to provide instruction about Holocaust and genocide beginning with the 2020-2021 school year. Brown signed the bill at the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education.

The bill inspired by Holocaust survivor Alter Wiener and championed by Lakeridge High freshman Claire Sarnowski.

Wiener died last year after he was struck by a car. He spoke publicly about his three years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps and hoped that “by sharing his painful story over and over, history would not repeat itself.”
