PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland man was sentenced to 8 months in prison after causing a butane explosion while making hash oil.

The US Attorney’s Office for Oregon said Christopher Hughes, 30, was using butane gas to extract hash oil from marijuana in a shed in Northeast Portland.

Someone in another room lit a cigarette lighter, which created a fireball. It burned Hughes and knocked out a wall that connected the shed to a house.

Three kids, including an infant under 1 were inside, though none were hurt.

Investigators found a THC and dozens of cans of butane in the shed.

Hughes pleaded guilty to endangering human life while illegally manufacturing a controlled substance. In addition to time in federal prison, he will have 3 years of supervised release.
