PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — In Oregon, 1 in 5 children live in poverty.
For more than 10 years, My New Red Shoes has been helping to make sure those kids are able to go to school with proper clothing and confidence. Now, they’ve partnered with Portland Public Schools to help kids from migrant families.
The smiles on their face say it all when the children of migrant workers get new shoes and gift cards for clothing for school. It’s a treat for the kids whose parents can struggle just to put food on the table.
“We benefit from the migrant program,” grandmother Elia Bracamontes said through a translator. “They are very efficient, they are able to do many things.”
The PPS Migrant Education program has partnered with My New Red Shoes to help the migrant families in the district.
“In this world, there is so much need,” My New Red Shoes Director Michela Bedard said. “So many things we need to do to make everyone happy and successful in our world and one of the greatest things is to make sure our kids are prepared for a safe learning environment.”
Bedard said because we live in the shoe capital of the world, many of the shoes are donated and they fundraise throughout the year as well.
There are more than 1,000 kids they help every year in the Portland metro area. Given that Oregon has the 5th largest population of migrants, this partnership seemed like a no-brainer.
“Our primary objective is to help the children of migrant workers who come to the United States to work in agriculture, fishing and cannery,” Elena Collazo with the PPS Migrant Education Program said. “And usually, these children move from state to state and city to city.”
This partnership and what it’s done for these kids is something these families don’t take for granted.
“Personally, they have helped me to motivate my children to come to school,” mom Blanca Barrita said through a translator. “When they wear their new shoes, they are very happy wearing the new shoes”
My New Red Shoes operates in Portland and San Fransisco.
