PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The mayor of Newport was piloting a small airplane when it had engine trouble and crashed on a beach on Monday.
Oregon State Police say 66-year-old Dean Sawyer was flying a Cessna 172 Skyhawk II with two passengers. The group was whale watching when there was a mechanical problem with the plane.
Sawyer made an emergency landing on the beach. One of his passengers was seriously injured but he and the other, a juvenile, were not seriously injured.
Sawyer has had his pilots license for 40 years and has been flying the Cessna for over 30.
