Oregon tweaks Hayward field design

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - The University of Oregon has announced several changes to the design of the new Hayward Field.

On the stadium's north side, the concrete bowl for lower-level seats that previously wrapped around the full field will be brought down to ground level.

The change eliminates 400 permanent seats, but will replicate some of the open feel of the old venue.

The Register-Guard reports the change also means people walking along East 15th Avenue will be able to see into the venue. For big events, however, temporary seating will be installed in the open section.

In another change, a nine-story tower overlooking the field will be relocated. It will also be renamed the Oregon Tower. Sons of legendary track coach Bill Bowerman - critics of the design - objected to the tower being named after him.

The new stadium is scheduled be in place for the 2021 World Track and Field Championships.
