PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An Oregon State Police trooper rescued 10 puppies during a traffic stop on Monday that were locked in a trunk without water while on a trip from Southern California to Seattle.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., OSP said Senior Trooper and K-9 handler Travis Peterson stopped a 2008 Ford Fusion just south of Medford on Interstate 5 after “several signs of suspicious activity.”

Peterson conducted a consent search and found the puppies — a mix of Huskies and German Shepards — locked in the trunk without water or air conditioning. OSP said it was 90 degrees at the time.

The owner was cited for animal neglect.

“OSP’s K-9 unit is not always about just finding illegal drugs,” the OSP Facebook post said, “some days they get to save the lives of puppies.”

The puppies were taken to Jackson County Animal Services.
