The ospreys who returned to Cowlitz County in late March are now the parents of a new osprey chick, the first of 3 eggs laid in April to hatch.

Electra and Watt-Sun put their nest on platform built by Cowlitz PUD around 2001 near a utility pole. Osprey have used this platform every year when they return to their summer home in Washington.

The other 2 osprey chicks are expected to hatch by June 1.

Osprey are birds of prey. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology said osprey are “unique among North American raptors for its diet of live fish and ability to dive into water to catch them.” They breed in summer in the Pacific Northwest and Canada, then migrate south and winter in South America.
