HILLSBORO, Ore. (KOIN) — A man claiming to work for Washington County Sheriff’s Office has reportedly been calling elderly Hillsboro residents and asking them to pay fines for missing jury duty, authorities said.
Hillsboro police said two elderly residents recently reported being targeted by the phone scammer.
The victims said they were asked to wire money through Western Union for fines accumulated from missing jury duty, police said.
A 73-year-old woman said the scammer called her on Tuesday. She said she didn’t send any cash, and instead reported the incident to police.
An 85-year-old man said he was contacted by phone and asked to send $7,000 on Wednesday. The man reportedly attempted to send the money, but an Albertson’s employee assisting him with the money gram realized it was a scam and called police.
The phone scammer is described as a man with a southern accent.
Washington County Sheriff’s Office says they do not issue fines for missing jury duty and never call people demanding money.
