Police: Luggage handler at PDX stole 6 guns

News

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A baggage handler at Portland International Airport was arrested this week, admitting to detectives that he stole half a dozen firearms from travelers.

For the last month, Port of Portland police said 26-year-old Deshawn Kelly would take guns out of checked backs. He said he did to provide for his family, who faced eviction, court documents said.

According to court documents, Kelly stole 6 guns and even tried to pry the locks off a gun case on a bait bag used by detectives to catch the thief.

He was arrested at his Northeast Portland apartment and admitted what he’d done, police said.

One victim told KOIN 6 News something needs to change — that when you check a bag with a firearm, it has a special tag that he feels makes it an easy target for criminals.

Kelly, a convicted felon, now faces 6 counts of aggravated theft and felon in possession of a firearm.

“I think it’s horrible,” said Jace Dees, who was traveling Friday at PDX. “We entrust our luggage with our trusted travel carriers and this is just ridiculous.”
