Heavy rain lead to flooding in some areas

FOREST GROVE, Ore. (KOIN) -- A day of heavy rain caused flooding in several counties on Thanksgiving day, and the high water continues to cause dangerous road conditions.

NWS warnings

The National Weather Service in Portland issued flood warnings for Washington and Benton Counties and flood watch all over the Willamette Valley.

Those warnings were allowed to expire but there is still a watch out.

Five roads in Washington County were closed Friday afternoon due to flooding.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation’s tips for rainy weather:

  • Clear your storm drains: Before, during and after a storm. Put leaves in green yard debris bin. Dispose of litter.
  • Don’t lift the grate on a storm drain. If the drain is blocked underground, call PBOT dispatch at 503-823-1700.
  • If a tree falls into a bike lane or travel lane, clear it if you can safely. First, look for power lines, and if you see them, don’t touch them and call 911 immediately. If you can clear small limbs from the street, call dispatch the next day, so the city can inspect trees for damage. For large limbs, call dispatch and don’t attempt to clear.
  • Use caution when driving. Use headlights, slow down, and look out for people biking and walking.\

Sand bag locations are open in Portland due to the heavy rain.

In Salem, rain and saturated ground caused the city's raw sewage to spill into the Willamette River. Gates were opened to relieve the system and avoid damage to homes and pollution.

Heavy rain also caused the North Yamhill River to spill over into Wennerberg Park in Carlton. No homes were threatened in that flood.

"It was down  probably down 15 or 20 feet below this yesterday and so it just started coming up fast," John Larouche said.  "This is not unexpected particularly after the rain yesterday. I expected it to be this way."
