New mural district planned in Portland, artists wanted

Portland Street Art Alliance looks to add "vibrancy" to viaduct area

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland’s art scene is growing with the help of a new grant. Portland Street Art Alliance (PSAA) won the Oregon Community Foundation Creative Heights Grant for a new mural arts district in Portland’s central eastside.

The Viaducts Arts Mural Initiative will start in 2020 with large-scale murals being painted in areas under the Morrison-Belmont and Hawthorne-Madison bridge viaducts, according to PSAA. Several walls along SE 2nd and 3rd avenues will also be painted, contributing to the “vibrancy” of the area.

Right now, PSAA has opened a statewide call to artists. Paint supplies and equipment rentals will be covered by PSAA with additional donations from local paint companies. PSAA said stipends average around $3,500. Applications are due by Dec. 20, 2019 and artists will be selected by Feb. 1, 2020.

PSAA has managed more than 100 commissioned and publicly-funded artworks in the city since it started in 2012.
