PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A special event held in Portland each spring is dedicated to empowering young women.
Girls Inc. of the Pacific Northwest will hold its annual “The Power of the Purse” fundraising gala April 12 in downtown Portland.
The non-profit group has hosted the gala for more than 13 years.
Local purse designers team up with girls from the Girls Inc. council to create purses that are auctioned off at the event. All of the money raised is used to fund STEM activities and camps for Girls Inc.
One of the designers, Angelina Pereira of TAH Bags, created 2 bags for this year’s event that she described as being both sleek and practical.
“The bags are designed to be multi-functional so you can use it for more than one thing,” said Pereira.
Sisters Lucia and Nico Battista are both on the Girls Inc. girls council this year. Their mom, Michelle Battista — who will also be a featured “pursonality” at the gala — said her daughters were inspired to join after they attended last year’s Power of the Purse.
The mother added that Girls Inc. was exactly the kind of program she wanted to find for Lucia and Nico.
“I wanted them to be surrounded by people that not only inspired them but could give them tools for a voice,” said Michelle Battista. “And that’s why I love Power of the Purse. They have to write a speech, get on stage and it’s all very personal.”
The Power of the Purse will take place April 12 at the Hilton on Southwest 6th Avenue.
