PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Students at Portland State University have designed “sleeping pods” with Portland’s homeless population in mind.
The micro dwellings were built as part of a project for the School of Architecture’s Center for Public Interest Design with the Village Coalition, City Repair and the Mayor’s office.
Pods were designed by 14 teams and they are at least 6 by 8 feet and no larger than 8 by 12 feet. Each design has a door, window and is portable.
“We hope that by sharing these design proposals with the public, we can change perceptions of houselessness and start to come together to create meaningful solutions to this persistent problem,” architecture instructor Todd Ferry said. “Our goal is to inspire new ways of thinking about the complex issue of houselessness and spark a community-wide conversation about alternatives to traditional temporary housing.”
The prototype pods will be unveiled at City Hall on December 5 and will be on display in the parking lot on NW Glisan and Park Ave. from December 9 to 11.
