Salem park warns visitors of attacking owl

SALEM, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A now infamous owl living in Bush’s Pasture Park in Salem has attacked four people — and park officials said it will be another month and a half before the owl moves on.

“It catches you off guard,” Brad Hillard told KOIN 6 News.

Hillard said he was jogging at the park early Monday morning when the Barred owl swooped in and attacked him.

“I spun around and nothing was there and my hat was gone!” Hillard said.

Hillard was the fourth person to report being attacked by this owl. In response, park workers put up warning signs, suggesting runners and walkers visiting the park protect themselves with hard hats.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department said this type of owl is normally found in Eastern Oregon. It may be protecting territory or a nest it has created in the park.

The department said there are no plans to catch the aggressive owl at this time. Attacks on park visitors could continue through March until the end of mating season.
